Tequila, agave, fresh lime and orange oil make for a pretty much perfect iteration of this classic.
Even more well-balanced was the margarita ($8). The Osaka sazerac ($12) calls on Nikka Coffey Malt Japanese whiskey as its backbone along with Copper & Kings' absinthe for a liquor-forward cocktail that finds balance in the addition of bitters, Turbinado sugar and lemon oil. The cocktail menu is reflective of the food menu’s style, featuring drinks inspired by Japanese and Mexican flavors. This area plays home to the bar, and my dining companions and I passed the short time we had to wait for a table here, sampling Dragon King’s Daughter’s signature drinks. The host stand is set in between two separate dining spaces, one a more typical area with tables, booths and access to sidewalk seating, the other boasting a lounge-like atmosphere, with black couches, a mini-courtyard and the robata grill. It was the size of New Albany’s Dragon King’s Daughter that caught my attention upon arrival. These mellow but mighty flames are front and center for patrons to see at the robata bar, one of several seating areas that comprise this worthwhile restaurant. Robata is Japanese-style grilling an open, charcoal flame used to cook a variety of ingredients. It's the robata menu that truly sets Dragon King’s Daughter New Albany apart, not just from its sister restaurant in the Highlands but from other Japanese eateries in the area.
While cut from the same fusion cloth, Dragon King’s Daughter New Albany tempers the Mexican influence in its dishes in favor of a more Japanese-forward menu, trading out tacos and quesadillas for ramen and robata specialties. Living less than a mile from the Dragon King’s Daughter on Bardstown Road, I never felt a need to traverse the Sherman Minton Bridge in search of its New Albany outpost - that is, until I began to understand what a distinctive experience the Southern Indiana location offers.
